About Us: Our History
The Cawte Dance Academy was opened over 40 years ago as the Deirdre Cadwell School of Irish Dance and is one of the longest established Schools still operating at the top level.
Its founder,Deirdre Cawte (nee Cadwell) is recognised as an outstanding Teacher and Adjudicator and her knowledge and expertise in the field of Irish Dance is unsurpassed.
From its foundation to the current day, Cawte Dance Academy’s record of Achievement is outstanding and thousands of students of all ages have benefited from the experience and teaching ability of Deirdre and in more recent years joined by her daughters Victoria and Linda.
In Ireland, Europe and the USA, numerous Dancing schools have benefited from Workshops and private tuition provided by the Cawte Dance Academy. Throughout, students of the Cawte Dance Academy have won titles at all levels of Competition and produced professional dancers for all of the world famous Irish Dance production shows.
Whilst steeped in history, Cawte Dance Academy is forward thinking,innovative and progressive and its experienced and talented Teachers as enthusiastic and inspiring as ever.
Whether you wish to become a competitive dancer or not, the primary emphasis has always been on enjoyment and in addition to the unique art of Irish Dance, it is recognised also as a great fitness discipline and Health activity for both body and mind.
Meet your Teachers
Deirdre Cawte (ADCRG)
Deirdre’s family for generations has been steeped in the tradition of Irish Dancing and Culture and she inherited her love for the Art from her parents Rowie and Maura Cadwell, both exponents of performing and teaching Irish Dance. Indeed, her Grandfather, Christopher Cadwell was a co-founder of An Coimisiun which is today the leading Irish Dance Organisation in the World. Not surprising then that her great passion has always been Irish Dancing and from the age of 4 until her late teens, she competed successfully at Provincial and All Ireland level, which at that time, was the top tier of Irish Dance and performed for several seasons at the Theatre Royal and Jurys Hotel in Dublin.
She successfully obtained her Irish Dance Teacher qualification and in 1983 she also obtained her Adjudication certification. She opened her own Dancing School in the early 1970's established a successful business and has continued teaching and adjudicating right up to the present day. In that time, she has introduced and trained literally thousands of young children,teenagers and adults into the skills and Art of Irish Dancing from all over Ireland and Europe and also from the USA, many of whom travelled to Ireland to attend her classes.
She has conducted Workshops and Tutorials at the invitation of other Dance Schools in Ireland, Europe and the US and adjudicated at all of the
Major Irish Dance Competitions throughout the World.
A number of her pupils became overall winners at World Championship level, which is now the pinnacle of Irish Dance in addition to numerous titles at Provincial and All Ireland competition, both in Step and Ceili Dancing. She has trained and provided Principal and troupe dancers for all of the top Irish Dance shows including Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Gael Force, Dance of Desire, Dance to the Moon and Night of the Dance including lead role performers for all.
Deirdre has also trained over 20 students who have been successful in going on to obtain their teaching qualification and opening their own Dancing Schools.
In addition to her own Dancing School, she has been teaching in National Schools in Ireland as part of the School Curriculum for over 40 years, choreographed routines for Corporate functions and Charity events in Ireland,travelled and taught extensively in Europe and the USA.
Deirdre also trained and choreographed the Circus Krone Ballet Company for 5 years. Based in Munich, Germany Circus Krone is the largest in Europe and their Ballet Company world renowned and the devised Irish Dance routine so popular it was retained in the show for 6 successive years.
Following the worldwide success of Irish Dance shows such as Riverdance and Lord of the Dance,Irish Dancing has thrived and become a Worldwide phenomenon,nowhere more so than in the United States. Deirdre has vacationed may times in the USA, particularly in Florida and has grown to appreciate and love the Country and its people.
Deirdre possesses a particular talent for what she does and been utilising her talent and enthusiasm in passing it on to the generations of children,nurturing and educating them to achieve the highest possible standards they can. Her belief is that whatever the standard and ability oF the student,Irish Dancing is a fun and enjoyable activity and an excellent discipline for helping to create healthier bodies and minds and can be enjoyed by all ages from babies to senior citizens.
Deirdre has a wealth of experience and knowledge of all disciplines of Irish Dance and has always been steeped in the traditions of the culture but she has also kept abreast of the ever evolving modern show dance styles and steps and indeed prides herself on being an innovator and creator of steps and routines.
She is proud of her Dance school, The Cawte Academy of Irish Dance and its achievements and together with her family team look forward to a new challenge in the US.
Linda Cawte (TCRG)
Linda competed at her first Feis in Dublin at 3 years of age and from then and throughout her Dancing Career was very successful in winning major Irish Dance Titles at Provincial, All Ireland, UK at the top grade, including gold medal winner at successive World Championships, the pinnacle of competitive Irish Dance competition.
She was asked by Michael Flatley to join the original cast of Lord of the Dance and performed on both Irish television and the BBC,including performances at the Prince Charles Trust at the London Palladium and the Royal Albert Hall.In 1997 She also performed at the Academy Awards in Hollywood with Michael and the Lord of the Dance troupe and Radio City andNew York amongst many famous venues.
Linda then joined the cast of Riverdance and in late 1997 performed the Lead Female dancer role for the first time in Seattle and went on to perform as Principal in San Francisco and many other major US cities during her 4 years with Riverdance. She also trained a number of dancers, some of whom went on to join Riverdance,including as Principle female dancer.
Following her retirement from Riverdance, Linda returned to Ireland and successfully obtained her Teaching accreditation with An Comisiun and
taught in Dublin and Co.Meath with the Cawte Dance Academy.
Linda shares her sisters passion for Irish Dancing (inherited from their mother) and derives enormous pleasure fron teaching, creating and choreographing new steps and routines for dancers of all ages and abilities.
She will continue to represent the Cawte Dance Academy in Ireland and looks forward to visiting Florida as often as possible to see the progress of the new venture which she feels sure will continue the history of success of the Cawte Dance Academy.
Victoria Cawte (TCRG)
Victoria has been dancing since the age of 4 and has dedicated a large part of her life to the performance and teaching of Irish Dance.
She competed successfully at the highest level in all of the major Irish Dance events throughout Ireland and Europe and won numerous titles,including Dublin, Leinster, All Ireland, British National and gold medal winner in successive World Championships, before retiring from competitive Dancing at 23.
She performed all over Ireland and Europe and also in North Africa and Sri Lanka as Principal dancer with the Aer Lingus Musical Society. In 1999 Victoria was invited and honoured to perform and tour with the celebrated Irish Musicians, the Chieftains, which included performances at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London.
She also choreographed and performed routines for the "Tumbles in the Mumbles", the Gymnastic Association of Wales in 2002 and numerous charitable events and functions in Ireland and the UK.
In 2003 she auditioned successfully for Principal dancer and was susequently asked to devise the Irish Dance Choreography for the successful European Show "Night of the Dance".Victoria also trained their Dance company into the Art of Irish Dancing.She performed the star role "Princess of Ireland" touring all over Europe for 5 successive seasons, choreographing and training the Company dance troupes to perform Irish dance disciplines. As principal Dancer,she was also interviewed for German radio and appeared on German TV.
Throughout her career, she performed and conducted Workshops in the USA Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia and the Ukraine. As a renowned "heavy shoe" dancer she was also asked to demonstrate and provide video and sound recordings of Irish Dance steps for the world famous Circus Krone's Ballet Company.
Whilst still performing at both business and charitable functions, her favourite activity is teaching both children and adults of all ages and abilities privately. In Ireland, in addition to teaching as part of the Cawte Dance Academy, she has also taught as part of the curriculum in National Schools since January 2012. She also acts as Irish Dance consultant on a regular basis for other established Dancing Schools both in Ireland and in Europe.
Victoria also hold sa Third level Diploma in Health and Fitness from Dublin City University and has experience in choreographing routines in other modern and contemporary Dance genres.
She has vacationed in Florida and the US many times and have developed a great love for the Country and its people.She believes it could afford her a wonderful opportunity to bring her ability to perform, teach and develop American children of all ages and abilities, not just to become Irish dancers, but also to become physically and mentally better equipped persons for the modern world.
